PhD Program in Mechanical Engineering - McGill University

Mechanical engineering is an engineering branch that combines principles of engineering physics and mathematics with materials science to analyze, design, and develop mechanical systems and processes. It is also one of the oldest and broadest branches of engineering.

McGill University in Canada offers various degrees in Mechanical Engineering including Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. Within 12 months since the start of the PhD study, the student is required to submit his/her research program to be reviewed by the Faculty Committee in a pre-doctoral oral examination, and the PhD research concludes with the discussion of the thesis. The time limit given to a student to complete a doctoral program is 4 years after completion of residency requirements, which are completed at the end of the third year of a doctoral degree.

Specialization Requirements

  • An applicant to a doctoral program must have successfully completed a master’s degree program, or its equivalent, in engineering or physical sciences, with a GPA of at least 3.3 out of 4. A minimum GPA does not guarantee admission to the major. Students will not be accepted directly from a program at the undergraduate level.
  • The subjects chosen for the PhD program will depend on the candidate's current academic qualifications and the qualifications needed to conduct effective research. The selection of materials is done in consultation with the thesis supervisor.
  • Candidates are required to pass a preliminary oral examination within twelve months of their enrollment in the doctoral programme.

Tuition costs

The cost of studying for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at McGill University is approximately $19,508 per academic year.
